Why should Models have all the fun? – Glamour Session Michelle Hayes Studio

23 May 2015 | Categories: Beauty | Posted by: Michelle

Lets face it Ladies. As a regular woman there is probably zero chance Anna Wintour will pluck you out of your every day life to be the next cover model of Vogue. Harsh, but true.  We all know that is reserved for the models, actresses and the occasional delusional person that gets famous for making a sex tape. ;)

BUT! That doesn’t mean you not are not worthy of the same glamorous photo shoot experience!

Who says you can’t have someone style you for your body type, have your makeup expertly applied in a way that enhances your own unique beauty and have you hair fabulously coiffed while you sip champagne? You are going to feel so damn good that your awesomeness (that you know is already inside of you) begins to radiate out which gets you ready for the moment you’ve been waiting for. You are finally ready for your close up…the lights, the cameras and the posing. You got this! You’re the star of your very own photo shoot and you are worthy of it all!

Well, well Gisele and Tyra. Look who’s smizing now??

Oh, and after you leave the studio on your super-model high you will need to book a night out with the girls, your loved one, or take your own self out on a date because you will look and feel amazing.

**Disclaimer – Michelle Hayes Studio is not responsible for what happens after you leave the studio while still radiating all that fabulous. ;)

But the experience doesn’t stop there…

You will be invited back to the studio in a week for the big reveal of your images. Get ready because this will make you re-live your photo shoot experience all over again. Yes, my dear, that is you in the photographs and no I’m not a magician. That was all you radiating from the inside out and back at me. I was just there to capture it.

Now the next time you find yourself in the check out lane at the grocery store you won’t have to pick up one of those glossy magazines to see beauty. All you have to do is go home, get out your own professional images and stare at yourself. Oh, don’t think that Kate and Cindy don’t do this. Kim K does it for sure. We all saw that episode where she was carrying around her Vogue cover while in Thailand. (I swear that was the only episode I’ve seen in years!)

Here’s a little glimpse of this experience I’m talking about…

You don’t need an excuse to do one of these sessions. Do it because you deserve to see your own beauty.

Contact me for more details about the session and to experience your very own super-model experience!

Tips for Creating Fabulous & Flattering Outfits For Your Photo Session – Michelle Hayes Studio NYC

21 Oct 2014 | Categories: Beauty, What to wear | Posted by: Michelle

Have no clue about what to wear for your photo shoot? Here are some things you need to think about when choosing your outfits.

Choose COLOR

Color is one of the most important things to think about when choosing an outfit to be photographed in. It can change the tone of a shoot in a second. If someone has been wearing black and then they change into something of a vibrant color it changes the mood of the shoot instantly. Here are a few examples of excellent colorful outfits..

add some SHAPE

The shape of a garment is extremely important and may not look the same in a photograph. Remember, a photograph is 2D and real life is 3D which means we are able to see the garment at all angles. So many times I’ve seen a cool looking top or dress that looks great in person, but fails to translate well in a photograph. Not only that it just may not be the right shape for your body. This happens a lot with the latest trends. They may not be for everyone. Hello skinny jeans!

Try to find shapes that flatter your own body type. This may take a while to figure out so don’t give up. You will just have to try a lot of  different styles on. There’s no way around this, but when you find the styles that flatter your body you won’t have to guess anymore. Here are s few good examples of people wearing styles that look awesome on their body type. You will notice they are wearing the clothes and the clothes are flattering their bodies…

Throw in some SPARKLE!

There’s no explanation needed here. A sparkly-sequined dress, or top, is something that makes me smile and is always appropriate. Sequins for bunch? Sure! How can you not feel fab in a sequined dress? It’s not possible!

I have curly hair and I accept it.

16 Sep 2014 | Categories: Beauty, Boudoir | Posted by: Michelle

So as you can tell from my “About” me pic that I have curly hair, really curly hair. But as a kid I didn’t know this because my hair was always brushed out. Check out this sweet Olin Mills portrait…

I  think my mom was trying to brush my hair straight. As you can imagine this lead to a lot of confusion as to what type of hair I had and how to care for it properly. On top of that I never saw anyone on tv or in the movies with curly hair so I really didn’t have anyone to identify with. There were no Taylor Swifts or Sarah Jessica Parker’s around for me to idolize their lovely locks.

In fact, I remember one day being at a friends house and browsing through their Readers Digest (yes the actual paper guide to see what was on tv) and I came across an article about who would be the new girlfriend for Alex P. Keaton on the hit show Family Ties. Yes, I realize I just dated myself with admitting to reading an actual Readers Digest AND watching Family Ties. The article matched up the two potential candidates. One was Courtney Cox (the unknown Courtney Cox at the time) and the other was an actress with curly hair.

Now we all know Courtney has amazing hair. It’s lusciously thick and probably can be curled or straightened and look fabulous either way. The other girl had equally beautiful hair, except it was of the corkscrew curls variety. Finally, I thought, a girl with hair like mine could be on tv! The article went on to list the pro’s and con’s for each actress and let’s face it, it was all about looks since neither of these two actresses were known at the time. I came to the end of the article and the last thing it listed as a “con” for the curly-haired actress was her hair. It said it was “too distracting”.

WTF? Too distracting?!?! At that moment my heart sank.

If this beautiful actress with the perfect-frizz-free-corkscrew curls could have her hair described as “too distracting” what could my unruly and thick be described as? I immediately felt the shame for having too different hair that I couldn’t describe.

I never forgot that article, obviously, and became even more self conscious of my hair. I already considered it wrong, or something I should not have, and I began to actually hate it. Since my pre-teen years my hair has been a major source of pain and shame for me. I had no idea how to care for it so it was a constant struggle to try to get it to look good. After many, many years of trying every product on the market trying to get it to change into something it’s never going to be (smooth and straight) I finally learned to just stop battling with it. It was a part of me and I was actually hating it!

I’m sure most woman can identify with hating a certain part of their bodies whether it be their hair, their smile, their boobs, their hips or their thighs. There just seems to always be something about our bodies to pick on and it really needs to stop. I know self-love is a huge concept and is not something you can one day wake and have, but I believe there is something even more important that needs to happen before that.

You need to accept yourself first.

Just accepting who are, without comparison, is a huge step and can get rid of a lot of turmoil you may have about not liking yourself, or a certain part of yourself. When I finally just accepted that I have curly hair, and that it’s quite awesome, I began to feel better about myself. The simple act of acceptance is saying “Hey, my body may not be anywhere near perfect, but I have this body, it’s all mine and that’s what make me unique” From that compassionate and supportive foundation, you can open up to the possibility of self love.

This is why I’m so passionate about helping women and girls to learn to love their hair. I’m also passionate about having women experience a portrait session with me and see themselves in a different light. To give them the chance to finally say this is me, I accept who I am and how I look at the moment (self-acceptance). Hopefully, when they get their beautiful images they can look at them and then start to feel some love for that woman in the picture. (self-love!)

Caroline Glam Session – Michelle Hayes Studio NYC

22 Jun 2014 | Categories: Beauty | Posted by: Michelle

This is Caroline. She is a Fashion Executive here in NYC and she is smart, beautiful and fabulous.

She wanted to do a Glam session to celebrate her 30th birthday and the woman she has become.

How about we celebrate this every-day beauty instead of all the models and celebrities we see online, in magazines and on billboards? Doesn’t she look just as fabulous on the cover of my magazine cover? Every woman should get a chance to celebrate her own beauty. Besides, why should all the models and celebrities have all the fun in front of the camera?

Glam The Dress – Michelle Hayes Studio NYC

05 Nov 2013 | Categories: Beauty | Posted by: Michelle

Are you are familiar with Trash the Dress in wedding photography? It’s when a former bride puts back on her wedding dress and has a fun and creative photo session that might or might not entail getting the dress dirty or wet. This may appeal to some brides, but I have another alternative that doesn’t involve getting that beautiful, and most likely expensive, gown dirty or ruined…

It’s called Glam The Dress. I much prefer this approach where you can put back on your gown and have a fashion inspired shoot with me. You can glam it up, or make it into an entirely different look, while getting some beautiful portraits done. What a great way to get another wear out of that dress! Didn’t get any glamorous pics of yourself from your wedding? Glam it up! Want to have an excuse to put back on that gown that reminds you of one of the most wonderful days of your life? Glam it up!

This is also a great way to get your bridesmaids back together as a thank you for being in my wedding gift. Make it a Girls Day Out with champagne and snacks. As with all of my sessions the Glam the Dress shoot comes with professional hair and makeup and this can be done in a studio or out on location.

Contact me if you have a wedding dress that you’d like to break out of storage and have a Glam the Dress session with me!

New Before + After Gallery – Michelle Hayes Studio NYC

02 Oct 2013 | Categories: Beauty, Boudoir | Posted by: Michelle

Boudoir + Glamour Photography Michelle Hayes Studio NYC

I’ve just added a new gallery to my portfolio because I want people to see the amazing transformations in my sessions. Professional Hair + Makeup is included in all my Boudoir + Glamour packages because I feel it is such an important part of the whole experience. Plus, I don’t want people scrambling to find the right hair + makeup person as it can be challenging. Also, without my talented makeup/hair artists I really can’t do what I do. It’s just hair and makeup you say? Au contraire! Let me break it down for you…

When you first book your session with me, whether it be a Boudoir or Glam session, we have a pre-consultation which includes a chat about your hair and makeup. I ask you how you want to look and offer suggestions. I will also direct you to my Pinterest page where I have many examples of hair and makeup looks. Though most of the women I work with don’t go for a theme or an elaborate look, but opt for something that’s basically them, but enhanced. If you have no idea of what you want, don’t worry. My trained artists are brilliant at enhancing your own beauty perfectly suited for either Boudoir or Glamour.

Once you get in the chair and the process starts you will begin to relax immediately. It’s such a pampering experience and I’ve chosen only the best artists with the softest touch to work with. My favorite part is when it’s time to apply the false eyelashes! One thing that I’ve noticed is that EVERYONE loves getting false eyelashes applied and yes they are included! So many women have never even worn false eyelashes so it’s a real treat. It also makes a huge difference in camera. Your eyes will pop!

Once the makeup is complete and the hair styled you will be amazed by the transformation. I believe this is the point where women are truly ready for the session. They’ve seen how awesome they look and they can’t wait to get into wardrobe. And these women, who never believed they could get in front of the camera and take a beautiful pic, are now seeing themselves in a different light. There’s something about seeing yourself in a different way that lights up something inside you, which then gets mirrored back out. I see it every time. And this is when I simply pick up my camera to document all this beauty.

To quote one of my favorite transformation stylist Ms. Stacy London (of the much acclaimed “What Not To Wear”)…

“If you can see yourself in a different way, then you can believe yourself in a different way.”

And who knows more about changing the outside to change the inside, to change to outside, other than Stacy & Clinton? They manage to pull it off with each fashion-impaired guest every time. EVERY TIME.

Have a look through my new Before + After gallery which will be updated more frequently as more and more women get to experience this pampering and self-confidence boosting experience.

Firebrand Call + My Message to Women

29 Aug 2013 | Categories: Beauty, Boudoir | Posted by: Michelle

Boudoir + Glamour Photography Michelle Hayes Studio NYC

A few weeks ago I had a mini-branding call with Kristen Domingue. We talked about my business and how to get clear on my message, what I’m trying to say to women through my photography business. Last year I made the decision to specialize in Female Portraiture and it was the best decision for me as an artist and business woman. This is the best way for me to be of service to women who need to feel beautiful again. I feel more connected to my clients and I want to connect with even MORE women who may feel like they don’t feel beautiful and don’t deserve a portrait of themselves.

The bulk of my clients are women who are doing this session for someone else as a gift, brides-to-be or women celebrating their anniversary or a birthday. There is nothing wrong with this reason for doing a boudoir session. Boudoir photography is mostly marketed to this type of client in the media. You hear a lot of “The ULTIMATE gift for your fiance” or “The BEST present he will EVER get”

But then I started to think about the women who were not getting married or didn’t have a partner to do this for. Should they be excluded from experiencing this type of session? Absolutely not. In fact, I believe there doesn’t even need to be a reason to do this at all and you can read about that in my last blog post here.

So check out the extremely helpful branding chat I had with Kristen where we figured out my new message to all women of why you should have a Boudoir, or Glam, session done.

“Feel beautiful for your own sake”

This is actually my 1 year anniversary of launching this site and I am so honored to be able to photograph so many women and give them the opportunity to feel beautiful for their own sake. Yes, they may still give the album or prints to a loved one as a gift but I know the experience is worth so much more to these women and they will never forget it.

Love,

Michelle

Looking & Feeling Beautiful For Your Own Sake – Boudoir + Glamour Photography NYC

12 Aug 2013 | Categories: Beauty, Boudoir | Posted by: Michelle

I started shooting Boudoir because a few of my brides wanted to do it as an amazing wedding gift for their fiances. It was an amazing, unexpected gift that always knocked their socks off. But, I also noticed that the women were totally surprised by the whole process and thoroughly enjoyed the photoshoot. I knew it was going to be a blast but I really don’t think they were expecting it to be so much fun. Women are usually so focused on not wanting to look awkward that they are completely surprised by how much they enjoyed to shoot!

I’ll give you a little snap shot of what goes on in a Boudoir or Glam session…

First we go over wardrobe selection and I help you style your outfits. Then you get to sit and have a professional artist style your hair and expertly apply your makeup. It’s a really relaxing process that I’ve noticed many women appreciate and enjoy.

We start the photo shoot where I give you guidance with posing using a mirroring technique., which means I pose and you copy me. It’s very easy. Your nerves dissolve and you are smizing for the camera feeling all Top Model-like. I’m not the noted Nigel Barker with a soothing British accent, but I will be telling you how amazing you are doing throughout the process. I’ll show you the back of the camera to confirm how great you are doing. You begin to see yourself in a new light, then you start to enjoy yourself, which then in turn makes you even more beautiful in front of the camera! In the end this pampering and confidence-boosting experience is all for the women and no one else.

So a year later and I’m still shooting Boudoir for bride-to-be’s, who are doing this to give to their fiances, and women who are doing this to celebrate an anniversary and I’m loving it. But, I begin to think do women really need a reason to experience this? What about the women who don’t have a partner or are not getting married? Shouldn’t they get to experience this as well? Hell yeah! In fact, I believe you don’t even need a reason to do this.

I want ALL women to experience this for absolutely no reason at all!

Ok, if you need a reason then I’ll give you one…

How about to look + feel beautiful for your own sake?

I’d say that’s a pretty damn important reason to do it because I think many women feel like they need to be in a relationship in order to do something like this. It’s that ever elusive once I get a partner, then I will feel ______. Beautiful? Amazing? Worthy? Those are all things you can feel now. And I bet if you start to feel those things now just for the sake of loving your own beauty then when you do meet someone they will appreciate it even more because you are already appreciating it. Win, win all around!

So here’s what I say about when to do a Boudoir, or Glam session (if you’re not comfortable in lingerie)…

Do it for yourself now and once you have these beautiful images that will forever capture your unique beauty then you can decide if you’re going to share them with someone else. A REALLY lucky someone else ;)

In my last blog post I wrote about being featured in Cosmo.com, well pictures of my clients were featured with a snippet of why they did a boudoir session. They are single women who did a Boudoir session just for themselves. You can read about their experiences here and hear about their experiences.

Feel free to give me a call for your complimentary consultation about doing a Boudoir or Glam session for no reason what so ever!

Strike A Pose! – Michelle Hayes Studio Posing Guide

04 Jun 2013 | Categories: Beauty | Posted by: Michelle

I had the pleasure to be asked to join the NYC Ladies Lounge for one of their monthly events last month. The theme of the evening was “How to look hot in pictures” and yours truly was the posing instructor for the evening…

Now, if you do a Boudoir or Glam session with me you do not need to know how to pose at all. I will absolutely guide you every step of the way so don’t worry if you don’t know how to pose. We’re not models who do this for a living, so I don’t expect you to come up with your own posing ideas.

This event was a way for fabulous ladies to get together in person and pick up some easy posing skills to improve their game in pics, whether it be a selfie or in a group shot out at night. Here are a few easy posing tips that will make you look fierce and ready for your close up…

I was browsing through all the recent CFDA award pics and I noticed many of my posing tips were being rocked on the red carpet by celebrities and models. Let’s see how many we can spot…

Here are some bonus poses that we came up with that night…
